Event Details

Background

The theme for the 50th Anniversary of Independence celebrations is ‘Pride and Industry, Celebrating 50’. In keeping with this theme, the iconic event ‘I Pledge’ was conceptualised by the Barbados Private Sector Agency in an effort to mobilise Barbadians to set goals and pursue them over the year demonstrating their pride (pledge) and industry (execution of pledge). As a result, Barbadians from all walks of life will be encouraged to show their commitment to creating positive change in their lives, community and country by making and executing pledges from February to October 2016.

The Pledges will provide the opportunity to focus on the Prime Minister’s mantra for the 50th Anniversary of Independence Celebrations of reclaiming those features of Barbadian life which we have lost and need to reclaim; discarding those things which are negatively impacting society and holding on to those features which we have not lost, and need at all costs to retain.

Objectives

  1. To widen the participation net for the 50th anniversary.
  2. To engender projects to improve society.
  3. To create opportunities for positive behavioral and attitudinal change.

The Concept

Persons will be encouraged to be creative and innovative with their pledges, however, several areas have been identified as guidelines which can be used and which will be promoted at the national level. These are:

  • February – Love Safely
  • March – Promote Health, Wellness and Food Security
  • April – Embrace Opportunities for Entrepreneurship and Business Development
  • May – Celebrate our Nation’s Future – Our Children
  • June – Protect our Environment – Plant a Tree
  • July – Buy Local, Support Local
  • August – Commit to Barbados (Special emphasis on the diaspora)
  • September – Perform a Random Act of Kindness
  • October – Be Aware and Assist in Crime Prevention

 

Pledges can be made at several levels:

  • individual
  • community
  • corporate
  • church
  • service clubs
  • schools etc.

During each month, persons will publicly indicate what they intend to do and should later demonstrate that they have accomplished their goal. Pledges can be made using a wide range of media, for example, through Facebook, Youtube, Instagram and Twitter.

Additionally, pledge books will be placed at strategic locations, including places where the commemorative broken trident will be on display. This will provide the opportunity for those persons who do not have access to social media to make their pledges.

With respect to schools and tertiary level institutions, those which have Facebook pages and other social media platforms can utilise them for pledging. However, schools can also be creative and design their own pledge ‘corners‘. Students can be selected to be “I Pledge Champions” to promote the activity and encourage their peers to participate.
